The Stages Of Life, The Stages Of Musik: Part 2, Ages 12-15

I must add something to the last post. An addition, if you will, and you will because I'm doing it regardless. My sister informed me that when I was 4-5 years old that I would blare Queen in my room and sing-a-long to the songs... loudly.

We Are The Champions - Queen

On to part two:

Ah, the awkward years begin. I'm in 6th-9th grade during these ages and that's ending elementary school, all of middle school and beginning high school. Such pleas(I was so miserable)ant times.

12/6th grade: At this point, Seth is on his way to college and I'm riding in the car with my mother to and from school. I would make mix CDs for us to listen to. They all had the title, "ZZ Josh 1", "ZZ Josh 2" or whatever the appropriate number that coincided with the mix was. I still have some of these CDs. They are half terrible, half still amazing - all very real.
ZZ Josh 1 contains the following songs:
1. The Typewriter Song - Funkungfusion
2. Are You The Walrus? - FurtherMore (A Christian rap group)
3. Help Me Rhonda - The Beach Boys

4. That Thing You Do! - The One-ders
5. My Guy - Mary Wells
6. Some punk rock version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"
7. Lean On Me - Bill Withers
8. Breakfast At Tiffany's - Rockapella (an all acappella group)
9. Blue Moon - Rockapella

10. Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz (The CD contained the edited version)
11. Baby - Moby

12. Natural Blues - Moby
13. One More Time - Daft Punk
14. Carolina In My Mind - James Taylor
15. Fire & Rain - James Taylor
16. Sweet Baby James - James Taylor
17. Country Road - James Taylor
18. Mexico - James Taylor

As you can see, very much still listening to oldies/James Taylor but also discovering a few bands on my own: Rockapella, Gorillaz, Moby, Daft Punk (best decision of my life), etc.

Now let's fast forward ZZ Josh 10 and see how much my taste has changed. I would be in 8th grade by this time.
1. The District Sleeps Alone Tonight - The Postal Service

2. Sleeping In - The Postal Service
3. Nothing Better - The Postal Service
4. Natural Anthem - The Postal Service
5. Clark Gable - The Postal Service
6. Brand New Colony - The Postal Service
7. There's Never Enough Time - The Postal Service
8. Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now) - The Postal Service
9. Such Great Heights - Iron & Wine
10. Every Night's Another Story - The Early November (EmoRock band)
11. When The Sun Sleeps - Underoath
12. Caught A Glimpse - Blindside
13. I Miss You - Blink 182
14. The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows - Brand New
15. RedUmbrella - ElEcTrIcIzE
16. Walls - Emery
17. Never Be Alone - The Get Up Kids
18. Message In A Bottle - The Police
19. For The Workforce, Drowning - Thursday
20. Monster Truck - ElEcTrIcIzE

Somewhat of a significant change.

About this time I'l in 9th grade; enter the poser. I went to hardcore shows, wore black hardcore band t-shirts, had my orange and black checkerboard slip on fans. I was an individual. Me, and ever other kid who listened to Zao, Norma Jean, The Chariot, Underoath and Blindside. Granted, for hardcore, you can't get better than those guys, but I just looked the part. I mean, I was listening to a band that had Ben Gibbard in it. It's impossible to be hardcore and do that.

So there we have it. My middle school/puberty years.

The Stages Of Life, The Stages Of Musik: Part 1, Ages 3-11

I recently ate dinner at couple's house with them and their son, Wallace. Wallace is three years old. Three. Does anyone remember anything from when they were three years old? Well Wallace better because I gave him some of the best advice, ever.

"Whenever you start listening to music that doesn't involve reciting the alphabet, take your stages slowly and fully."

This, along with an encounter with Georgina who said I was very versatile in my musik choice, inspired me to do a series of blog posts on musical stages as they coincided with stages in my life. Without further adieu, here is part one: Ages three to eleven.

Since this was my, "I'm young and impressionable" stage, this really set the tone for a lot of what I listen to today.

Between the ages of three and eleven years old I was constantly with my Aunt Boo (my family refers to me in this stages as "such a buster." I have yet to figure out what that means). We would ride around town with the windows down and blow air-horns at people, eat at local restaurants and rot our teeth with sweets. Not much has changed in our relationship from then until now; especially the musik. Oldies, baby: Motown classics, beach musik, soul. We used to have a radio station called Fun 100.1 but it passed years ago. Now we just listen to the CDs over and over again, and we're both totally okay with that.

This is a 9 minute song that features a large horn ensemble, a consistently fast congo, a chorus with falsetto points, and an overall mood, of groove. This is by far one of the best soul songs I've ever heard in my life.
Move On Up - Curtis Mayfield

As far as soul goes, nothing beats the classic James Brown.
This Is A Man's, Man's, Man's World (LIVE) - James Brown

Then we move onto the beach and shag music we used to listen to. Sure we had a large library of music, but this one is an all time favorite.
Give Me Just A Little More Time - Chairmen Of The Board

~~~~~
Continuing this young and impressionable stage, I was also introduced to a lot of variety from my brother and father.
My brother is seven years older to him so obviously I have always looked up to him. Even if that means him listening to Christian punk rock.
Under Lock And Key - MxPx
Don't worry, this was only his taste in middle school. It gets better. You'll see.
Then my father, post-hippie, jazz head. Granted, my father is about as hip as they come. I mean, has your father been to an Iron & Wine show and know who Girl Talk is? All the while listening to Grant Green and Joni MItchell? Boom. Hip to the jive, daddy-o.
So my father, in my youngest stage, would always be playing something. Whether that meant on the guitar, on the stereo, in his mid-life-crisis Austin-Healey, where ever. I'm sure he played more but what I remember most are two of the greatest folk musicians ever and a touch of true classic rock.
Back in the day, my family used to rent the same beach house every year at Sunset Beach. It had a nude portrait of Betty Boop at the top of the stairs - unimportant. My father would always bring his guitar and in fact, this is where I first played my guitar. James Taylor is the sound of summer to me.
Fire And Rain - James Taylor
As far as folk goes, it truly does not get better than Joni Mitchell.
A Case Of You - Joni Mitchell
My father constantly insists that Hendrix is one of the best guitarists ever. As far as I'm concerned he was just one of the most influential guitarists ever.
All Along The Watchtower (Bob Dylan Cover) - Jimi Hendrix
So there we have it. My elementary school years.
The Movies Of 2008
Here is last year's list: The Movies Of 2007
So I felt a little guilty about posting this so late until I recently saw that the BET Music Awards show was on a week or so ago and since we all know how much I love to resemble the famed television station, I actually felt encouraged by this. Well anyways, before we get underway there are a few things you should know going into this list:
1. All of my ratings and reviews are completely subjective (i.e. they are based on what I thought/personal opinion)
2. This list is completely right and all who question it are wrong
3. This list is in order of personal favorites in descending order
4. There is an awards ceremony at the bottom
5. An average movie rating is 3/5 stars
6. This list was in no way affected by any outside sources; all ratings/reviews are completely me unless stated otherwise (although a special thanks does go out to IMDB, Flixster and Netflix for their help selecting these movies and for info on directors/writers/etc.)
7. You may be wondering about how I classify a 2008 movie. Any movie that has achieves limited or wide release from January 1 - December 2008 in USA for the 1st time.
8. A new aspect has been added to the reviews: Replay Value. This is a system that establishes how likely I am to watch this movie again. It's based on a 0-5 point system as follows:
0 - I wouldn't watch this movie again, even if it meant saving your life
1 - I would have to REALLY like the people I am with and be in a completely apathetic mood
2 - I MIGHT suggest this movie to someone who I know would enjoy it but I wouldn't watch it on my own again.
3 - I would suggest this movie regularly and wouldn't mind watching this movie again
4 - I am definitely going to watch this movie again and will buy it if I ever see it for a good price. HIGHLY recommended.
5 - I am watching this movie right now it's so amazing. I will buy this as soon as I get a chance. You are to see this movie at all costs.
Well that about sums up all the previous knowledge needed in order to understand and fully enjoy this list. Hope you do:
Title: The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
Rating: 5/5
Review: I took a while to give this movie an actual star rating and, upon the restless internal debate, I cannot bring myself to give this movie anything less than 5 stars. It is by far the best movie I've seen since 2005, no questions asked. What else could we expect from Fincher? This tale of gigantic proportions takes place in sizable increments. Benjamin Button (Pitt) is THE simplest minded character with THE most complex problem I believe I have ever seen in a movie. Pitt's acting ability (and stunning good looks) never cease to amaze me and he in no manner lets down. His ability to completely immerse himself into a role with no real world plausibility, then bring that character to life, actually makes me short of breath. I saw this movie in a packed theater upon which I laughed loudly, gasped, grabbed the seat and, eventually, cried. Cinematically it's simple yet profound while the acting is nothing short of an example for many movies to come. People will watch this movie and realize their desire to direct. This movie takes no bounds and Fincher realized it was just that: A movie with no limits. He took every solid idea he had and incorporated it into what is the near flawless production of "The Curios Case Of Benjamin Button." While I will say that the probability of this movie having the same impact upon re-viewing is limited, that in NO way hinders my passion.
Replay Value: 5
Title: Synecdoche, New York
Rating: 4.5/5
Review: This movie is hands down in the top three of the year and maybe even in my top 50 of all time. It's easily one of the greatest screenplays ever written and is another home run, nay, grand slam for Charlie Kaufman. Everything he's touched was gold until now. When I heard he was writing it I was all over it. When I heard he was directing it there was nothing more I could do than giddy like a school girl who sees their crush leaving a love note in their locker. That's how I felt about this movie. Before I saw it my brother told me about it and I went nuts. I tried to learn as little about this film as to be completely taken away by everything and boy oh boy was I ever. The story follows Caden Cotard (Hoffman) and his plain and simple life - or so we primely think. Caden's wife leaves him and in has a very rough time with it loosing all sense of reality and of time and space. He becomes obsessed with occupying his time and decides to work with his newly gifted grant money. He decides to make another play. A play about a man with an ordinary life. Only the thing about life is "no one is an extra... they are all leads in their own play." It's the play about the everyman. No one is the star and the play seems to go on and on. It lasts well over 40 years. Each person is given a different conflict by Caden every day. It's phenomenally shot, brilliantly editing, astoundingly well written, witty and humorous, pleasant and real yet intense and unearthly. I can could go on and on about each and every scene, how the time progresses in real life and in the warehouse itself. How that characters are all individuals and how each understudy is the same character while being a different person. It's beautifully shot and makes gives the audience a sense of hesitancy while keeping to a repeated pattern to allow us to follow along. Some things are unexplained but that's what makes it Kaufman. It's brilliant. I cannot suggest this film highly enough. See it. Please do yourself a favor and see it. Replay Value: 5
Title: Wall-E
Rating: 4.5/5
Review: This clean, laugh-filled ride is by far the best movie I've seen all year so far. It kept my laughing all throughout the entire movie and I can't remember the last time that happened. The visuals in this movie are the best I've seen to date in cinema or video games. The emotion shown by that which isn't supposed to is more than I can say for most acting jobs to date and there is no wasted dialogue. This is by far a magnificent movie that cannot be missed or under appreciated. While there is too much that I can write about this film without getting to my conclusion of this spectacularly extravagant, reassuring masterpiece that indeed, Disney-Pixar has done it again. See this movie now, it's worth the money. Replay Value: 5
Title: Man On Wire
Rating: 4.5/5
Review: "Man On Wire" is a documentary about Philippe Petit's daring passion to be a tightrope walker and his dangerous locations. It is amazingly shot, edited phenomenally well and over a MUST see. The interviews are captivating, the depictions are awesome and comical and the overall story of Philippe is breathtakingly inspiring. I know most people don't like documentaries but the way this one is set up, in retrospect to all other docs, is astoundingly above par. Simply put, this is the best documentary I've ever seen since "Scratch." Replay Value: 4
Title: Doubt
Rating: 4.5/5
Review: So let's just talk about how freaking blown away I was by this movie for a second. All I knew about it was that it was for a more mature audience and that Phillip Seymour Hoffman was in it. Only knowing that I obviously had the expectation of a good acting experience but not one, nay, two of the best of the year! Every actor/actress BLEW me away with powerfully believable performances. This film follows Father Flynn (Hoffman) as he befriends a small boy in his parish. Upon paying such close attention, two nuns (Streep and Adams) suspect foul play on the Father's part. Upon attempting to prove him guilty the nuns examine their own lives as closely. The suspense-filled ride this flick takes you on will have you laughing, wide-eyed and happily confused. The only reason I didn't give this film 5 stars is because there are several shots taken at odd angles that more distracted me than added. The character development is phenomenal and you can 100% believe every action and somewhat guess the reactions. Even Viola Davis', the boy's mother, scenes, despite being so short, make me want more and more. It was also nice to see Amy Adams in a none-childish/chick flick role. She really as a perfect fit for her character. Just wait until you see Hoffman and Streep go toe to toe in the office. It'll make you squirm and smile. The story is great and the plot flawless. The acting - by far superb, the music is great, the dialogue is great, there is substantial comic relief that never distracts from the overall tone and there is enough seriousness to both keep us attached without overbearing. Its mastered balance only adds to the intensity and fullness of the film... making me long for more while being apprehensively satisfied. This film is without a doubt a must see for everyone and I can and will recommend it to you all. Replay Value: 4.5
Title: 4 Luni, 3 Saptamâni si 2 Zile (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days)
Rating: 4.5/5
Review: This movie is difficult. Yes, it is awesome and yes, Anamaria Marinca is possibly the best performance in a 2008 foreign film but did I enjoy it? I don't know if I can say yes. Not because the film is bad or unenjoyable; not in the least bit. The film is quite good and as a movie it's bewitchingly amazing. As entertainment, it's atrocious. The cinematography is brilliant and literally could not have been better in any way. The soundtrack is nonexistent as only real life sounds are heard in our longing ears. Each scene is distinctly appropriate, well planned and executed and feels very controlled by the director while allowing the actors and shots to be natural. The extra half star comes from my passionate love for the cinematography used in this film in correlation to the back lighting. I can't say too much about this movie since it's simplicity is mind blowing but I can say this: you will not enjoy this movie but its viewing is mandatory. Replay Value: 4
Title: Revolutionary Road
Rating: 4/5
Review: A powerhouse performance from every character in the film, each with their moment to shine. Winslet and DiCaprio star in this film, and that's exactly what they do: star. They shine bright in their ability to take on any role and perform any character masterfully and believably. If you want to see good acting, watch this movie. As far as the story goes, it over rules what little plot there is and makes this movie a character examination. Frank and April Wheeler (Leo and Kate) are seemingly average people with comfortable lives. This makes their decision to just pack up and move to Paris a surprise to everyone, especially with a few added twists. The reason I can't give this film a perfect rating is because the involvement of the children is very limited and we often forget they exist, but then again, this is a focus on Frank and April. There isn't anything wrong with the movie, it would just be viewed by the average movie-goer as "slow" or "dragging." In my opinion, it's intense and captivating. I would easily suggest this movie to anyone who likes "The Wrestler," "Benjamin Button" or "Forest Gump". Replay Value: 4
Title: Frost/Nixon
Rating: 4/5
Review: If I had to choose one word to describe every aspect about this movie: superb. Superb directing, superb cinematography, superb acting, superb plots and dialogue, there is nothing about this movie that sells it short of one of the greatest films of 2008. Michael Sheen plays Frost in another stunning performance that rivals every Oscar nominated actor and if he keeps it up, I'll see every movie he's involved in. Frank Langella has a surprisingly resemblance in his astute characterization of our President. Ron Howard of course has every aspect under his total control and allows every scene to be perfect. The interviews are interesting and informative but I have on beef with it: not enough information was provided in the beginning. If you didn't know anything about President Nixon then you would find this movie confusing and boring. Thankfully, I watched this movie with my informed father (he's only informed because he's old and remembers all this jazz) but without him I would have had many questions. That's a mistake. Also, the other loss of half a star comes from the replay-ability of the movie. There is no arguing this movie's acclimations but as far as entertainment goes, this one is hardly worth a re-watch. At least not for a while. If you do know about Watergate and these Frost/Nixon interviews then you will without a doubt enjoy this movie from start to finish - it's impossible not to. Replay Value: 3.5
Title: Funny Games
Rating: 4/5
Review: While I cannot pin-point anything wrong with this movie, I cannot give it a perfect rating due to the fact that there is no redeeming value to it. This movie is great though; fantastic, even. While I haven't seen the original yet (this is a shot for shot remake of a German film by the same director), I assume this version is better. Even though there isn't as much characterization as I would prefer, there is sufficient amount to precede with the story. In fact, the lack of development may be due to the director's goal of keeping the characters simple. I also love the aspect of directly addressing the movie audience; that is sweet. It reminds us that we are making a conscious decision to watch the brutality. The acting is great, the sound is amazing and the story (and background story) is unbelievably captivating. I really can't wait to watch this movie again and highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind the blood. Replay Value: 4.5
Title: Pineapple Express
Rating: 4/5
Review: My expectations for this movie were pretty high since I would laugh out loud every time I saw the previews. So needless to say, I went into this one expecting to be entertained. Let me be the first to say, it definitely lived up to my hype. Take your typical stoner movie, actually make it funny, add ridiculous fight sequences and wonderful acting and you've got "Pineapple Express." The characters are hilarious and quotable. The fight scenes are hilarious and memorable. The plot is wacky and fun filled from credits to credits. It's awesome. I'd easily watch this over-the-top action/comedy again and I hope (those of you who don't mind this kind of humor or language) will too. Replay Value: 5
Title: The Wrestler
Rating: 4/5
Review: I equate good acting with not being able to tell if the actor is aware he is on screen - becoming one with the character. Mickey Rourke is one of, if not the best actor of the year with his star performance as Randy "The Ram" Robinson in "The Wrestler." In the 80's, The Ram was a star wrestler. Nowadays he lives in a trailer park, is washed up and works in a local grocery store to make ends meet. His legacy is the only that keeps him in the ring. Fans recognize him as The Ram holds himself as being just as famous as ever... in the beginning. Yet as the movie progresses, Rourke transports through the decay and depravity of this character. His all star performance matched with Aronofsky's signature cinematography and editing (both of which add to the intensity and flow of this movie) is a feat worthy of Academy success. The sound editing is great, the story is phenomenal and the plot grows more and more intense as the crowd begins to surge. I would easily watch this movie again and cannot wait to delve deeper into the second go around. You cannot miss this star role in this star film. Replay Value: 5
Title: Son Of Rambow
Rating: 4/5
Review: This movie finalized my theory that British people are just all around funnier than Americans. This movie is intelligent, creative, unprecedented and well worth your time. The acting is both terrible and great but overall exactly what the director wanted, so I like that. The editing is nice and the sound acceptable but the story! Man, talk about original. This movie follows two young boys with a big camera and even bigger dreams. When one of the boys gets ahold of a copy of "Rambo," the two decide to make their own spin-off starring none other than them and their friends. The dialogue is this movie's key to success. Well written with non-stop references and intelligent comedy, Son Of Rambow is one of the best comedies of 2008. Replay Value: 3.5
Title: The Dark Knight
Rating: 4/5
Review: **SPOILER REVIEW**
Okay, granted, this is the best superhero movie to date. Congratulations. As a movie itself, I found myself wanting more. Not wanting more as in I want more LOTR, but wanting more to make it a better movie. While the story is amazing, the acting is above par and the directing is dark... again, I'm sure I would have liked this movie more if I could have seen it. But then again he is "The Dark Knight" so where's my argument? It's definitely worth seeing if you liked "Batman Begins" or even any of the other installments and also if you just want to be entertained for two and a half hours. I know it didn't feel that long at all but it seemed as if there was too much story for too short a movie... also (SPOILER) Two-Face dying???? I mean come on! All that foreshadowing for only 20 minutes of infamy? Poor choice with that one Nolan. You loose a whole star for that decision - that one, and allowing Bale's voice to sound like Darth Vader's. Overall it's great and Heath Ledger is amazing, does that sum it up enough? Replay Value: 4
Title: Be Kind Rewind
Rating: 4/5
Review: Hilarious and fun to watch, this comedy is definitely going on my "Best Of..." list for 2008. The story follows Jack Black and Mos Def as they accidentally erase all the VHS tapes in a rental store. With the landlords already hot on their tale to shut the store down, these two have to come up with a plan and quick. It's original and unprecedented and who else to deliver such a masterpiece than one of the most creative directors to date. WIth classic Gondry creativity and cinematography, this goes down as another smash hit for the esteemed director. For any fan of movies, this one is a must see. Highly recommended because I can't wait to watch it again. Replay Value: 5
Title: American Teen
Rating: 4/5
Review: As I watched this above average documentary about average teenagers in high school. I longed for nothing more, than more; more of its brilliance and more of its subjects. It's funny, it's sad, it's nerve-wracking and it's a must see for any documentary fan. I know this doesn't directly relate, but if you like "This American Life" then you will like this one. Replay Value: 3
Title: The Visitor
Rating: 4/5
Review: Wow. Talk about a heavy story. "The Visitor" follows a few days of change in the life of Walter Vale (Jenkins) and does not come lightly. These characters offer accessibility to all who watch them and I would challenge you to not become emotionally attached. I know I couldn't do it. This is seriously one of the best representations of average life and average (and actually believable) relationships between the characters. The development of the characters and the plot are near masterful as is Jenkins' acting. My word what a phenomenal job by Jenkins. The cinematography constantly adds to the scenes, the sound is good, the art direction commendable and the directing an overall success. I would easily suggest this film to anyone who is looking for a heartwarming drama but is still suited for a little pain. I cannot say one negative thing about this film - see it. Replay Value: 3.5
Title: John Adams
Rating: 4/5
Review: It's a mini series but it still came out in 2008 and I want to review it. Paul Giamatti always hits a brick wall with the critics, even though he always delivers. I can't think of one movie he is in that I don't like, and now he's John Adams!?! Freaking. Awesome. This 7 part mini series capture the true story of our nation's history while focusing on the man. It's long but it's a mini series so you know what you're signing up for. If you like history or you like HBOs productions, easily, EASILY watch this. If you get "bored" with historical dramas or find Giamatti "lame" then go run into a tree. Replay Value: 3
Title: Slumdog Millionaire
Rating: 4/5
Review: As this story starts out, I had do idea what was happening. A Hindi version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" with a common tea-fetcher as its succeeding contestant is now turning into a nationwide frenzy of wanting this under... excuse me, slumdog to succeed. The acting is a little shy but it doesn't distract so it's okay. It's cinematography however, is excellent, the characters are captivating, the culture intriguing and the overall style of the past experience explanations kept me very in-tune and following the story. Overall this is easily one of the best movies I've seen this year and over an astounding film. I can definitely suggest this film to, truly, anyone. Replay Value: 4
Title: JCVD (Van Dammage)
Rating: 4/5
Review: This movie attached itself to life. JCVD is somewhat of a cheese ball in my book. Never really made anything groundbreaking and always played the same action role. Naturally when I heard a movie was going to be made about the man JCVD in a dramedy style I was all over the idea. The movie follows Jean-Claud Van Damme's search for money in a custody battle. In his attempt to get the cash transferred he ends up stumbling into a robbery. While the public thinks he is behind it all, JCVD is simply trying to win his daughter. The plot is intriguing but mostly because of the esteemed editing job. This really is one of the best edited films I've seen in a while. It keeps the interest, it tells the story fully while leaving room for questions. The characters a typical - except for JCVD. His role takes on several throughout the flick. He's the action star, he's the dad, he's an average hostage, he's a star, he's the real JCVD in a monologue, he's great. It's a great movie if you're looking for a drama. There are some movies that you "have to get movies" to like. This is one of them. Not for the average theater hopper but definitely a must see for all critics. Replay Value: 3.5
Title: Planet B-Boy
Rating: 4/5
Review: This is an inspirational documentary that captures the very soul of the B-Boy (Beat Boy) scene. The concept is to film the greatest breakdancing crews in their aspirations to win "Battle Of The Year." This contest hosts multiple countries and is a representation of each nation's hip hop culture. The cinematography is great, the characters are real, the story is captivating, the moves are un-freaking-believable. This movie is one for any fan of dance or for anyone willing to learn about the experience. I'd easily watch it again. Replay Value: 4
Title: In Bruges
Rating: 4/5
Review: Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) are hit men; hit men with a history. Ken, the fatherly figure in the relationship, is well versed and experienced while Ray is troubled and becoming wiser by the day. The audience will learn about life while these characters try and live their struggles, addictions and loves. This film is 100% solid and anyone with similar movie taste in mine will love this film. Every character is well casted and developed, each shot is excellently portrayed through the emotionality of the camera and the story is outstanding. You really can't afford to miss this film (I'm looking at you Crosswell family). Replay Value: 3.5
Title: Defiance
Rating: 4/5
Review: I would consider myself quite the Daniel Craig fan. He is perfectly casted in every other film and "usually" plays the same gangster-esque character, which is fine with me. When I heard he was doing a WWII movie and was playing a Jew, I took a step back. Needless to say, Craig still brings a certain ruggedness to the character but I can easily say that I am very impressed at his acting ability. In fact, this movie had some of the best acting I've seen all year. Every character, every extra was primo - grade A. The cinematography is very good, the editing is great (despite a few choppy montages), and the sound is crazy great. I can honestly say that this movie is the best WWII movie I've seen from the Jews' perspective. The films follows two brothers (Craig, Schreiber) who form a rebellion against the Mother Country in WWII. Each brother has an approach to how to rebel, both completely opposite. Upon the eventual separation we find one crew fighting with bullets and brawn while the others continue to communally live. It's adroit. Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, Glory) directs this hit and I can honestly say that he has given this movie every last tweak it needs to be phenomenal. Any fan of war movies, history or just great movies in general will be well satisfied with this film. Replay Value: 3
Title: Appaloosa
Rating: 4/5
Review: I cannot think of a western that has come out in 2000's that I don't like and this one is definitely in that category. It holds true to traditional western style and plot while adding a new element to the genre: drama. There is very little action in this wild, wild western and I love it. The chemistry between Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen continues to shine in this entertaining film. As a pair of hired guns the two men move into a town to protect it from the bad guys. Okay, nothing we haven't heard of before. What's this? An introduced romance? Alright, I can dig it. Whoa! Guns! Awesome! Oh man, this is intense... and fun! Appaloosa is a hit. Replay Value: 3.5
Title: Role Models
Rating: 4/5
Review: Danny (Paul Rudd) and Wheeler (Seann William Scott) are co-workers as publicists for an energy drink... for a while. Once they run into some trouble, these two have to do 150 hours of community service in a month. They get placed with a Big Brother program with opposite kids. As they learn about the children and what it takes to be an adult, every character is dynamic. It's entertaining, really hilarious and surprisingly clean despite the language. And SWS isn't a total tool (congratulations big guy!) Overall, this really is a comedy that you want to see. I know I would again. Replay Value: 4
Title: The Reader
Rating: 4/5
Review: This tale of forbidden love truly is Oscar worthy. Especially Kate Winslet's stunning performance. It's dark, it's horrid, the cast is perfect and the story is alluring yet the audience wants nothing to do with it. It's a mild version of a slow motion, injuring car crash. You watch it happening. It takes it's time. It's stunning and well performed despite its chaos. In the end the car is ruined while the people are merely injured; as Michael's life is with his lover. The way this film is shot also adds an entirely new level of personal involvement in the film. You are 100% immersed in every scene and long for nothing more than to be distant from the friction of the characters and actions. The tale is beautiful. This movie is beautiful. Replay Value: 3
Title: Milk
Rating: 4/5
Review: Let me clarify before I begin: I am against gay marriage and gay rights BUT I do not hate gay people and in fact, love them no differently. This movie is good, not great. Very overrated by media and political standings in the Academy. I like biographical dramas and am all for political activism but can we really vote a man for best actor to win just because he played a role that we want to support? No. Did Sean Penn do a good job in this movie? Absolutely. His outlandish tenacity puts him in a perfect position to play a very believable gay - especially one who is so open and passionate about his work. Did he deserve the award? No. This movie follows the life and times of Harvey Milk, a political head in California who drives to be the first openly gay man elected into office. His journey is heartfelt and uses emotions and stereotypical approaches to achieve his goal and the movie broadly exemplifies this. Should you see this movie? If you like political movies or if you are gay, without a doubt. Otherwise, this movie was average and only received the extra half star due to its use of historical accuracy. Replay Value: 3
Title: Bigger, Stronger, Faster
Rating: 4/5
Review: In America, we define ourselves in the superlative: we are the biggest, strongest, fastest country in the world. Is it any wonder that so many of our heroes are on performance enhancing drugs? Director Christopher Bell explores America's win-at-all-cost culture by examining how his two brothers became members of the steroid-subculture in an effort to realize their American dream. It's well shot and very real. A documentary that everyone can enjoy. Replay Value: 4
Title: Run Fatboy Run
Rating: 4/5
Review: This movie is obviously intelligently written through and through. There are no wasted scenes nor does any scene not contain at least one joke. I was snickering the whole movie and would easily watch this one again. If you aren't familiar with Simon Pegg (Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz) it is never too late to start. I will say this: It's British. So if you don't like British humor then steer clear. BUT if you do then you can't afford to miss this one. Replay Value: 3.5
Title: Ghost Town
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: Dr. Pincus (Gervais) momentarily dies in a standard procedure. This happening allows him to communicate with remaining ghosts; ghosts who have unattended business. This selfish man must learn the ultimate lesson or suffer the penalties. Gervais' acting is hilariously exact. Everyone in the film is exactly who they need to be. The precise dialogue, the witty British humor and the story all add up to a hilariously entertaining flick that had me guffawing and crying through and through. It is a great film and I cannot wait to watch it again. If you like British comedy (Gervais, Pegg, etc.) then you can't afford to miss this one.
Title: The Bank Job
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: I'm not the biggest Jason Statham fan but I decided, "Hey, I'm in the mood for an action flick and this guy seems to be hot right now." I was pleasantly surprised. Based on a true story, this flick starts out with quite a bit of character development. Surprising for an "action" movie. The story quickly develops and the conflict is obvious yet somehow, despite being familiar, somehow had a freshness to it. Like we knew what was going to happen but were still caught off guard. I like that in a film. The story follows a typical bank robbery with classic characters and behavior but I always love it when by the end of the movie the audience is rooting for the thieving protagonists. Everything is pretty average about this one except for the acting and a few plot points. This however is not your typical action movie. It's slow(er) paced and doesn't have as many explosions. The overall mood of it however is that of the genre. Regardless of the genre it fits into, it's good and worth seeing. I'd easily watch it again. Nothing profound but easily enjoyable. Title: The Incredible Hulk
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: Indeed I agree that this is wondrous compared to Ang Lee's failed and mocked attempt. Yet on a movie scale it is only above average which for a Marvel movie, is great. The action sequences are sweet and while I was a little taken back with the CGI Hulk, it actually grew on me. Edward Norton is of course awesome and surprisingly, so is Liv Tyler. The characters are well portrayed and are given enough characterization for the audience to fully understand each. This movie is worth seeing if you are a Norton fan, a comic book fan or an action/sci-fi fan. Overall, recommended and entertaining. Replay Value: 3
Title: Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: I will say that without it's predecessor, this movie would have been a little worse. Yet because of the first one, there was little need to reestablish the characters any more than this movie did. This gave it plenty of opportunities to accept it's "sequelness" and be whatever it wanted to be. I must say that to really enjoyed this one but you need to see "Hellboy" and believe me it's worth it. It's as if del Toro said, "This movie is going to be a comedy with amazing characters and captivatingly sweet action sequences.... oh and somewhat of a plot" because that's exactly what this was. If you're looking for an epic hero story then continue the search. If you're looking to laugh throughout a movie and watch amazing cinematography then sign up for this one. I really liked this one and would like to watch it again. Replay Value: 3
Title: Young At Heart
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: A very inspirational and heart warming documentary. This flick follows a New England senior citizens choir as they continue to stay hip by singing contemporary hits. Starting out with a deliciously cute version of The Clash's "Should I Stay Or Should I Go," this film had me hooked on how delightful these soon to be well developed characters are. The documentary style is classic, the interviews pertinent, the subject lovable, the process adorable and memorable. I found myself delighted with this film and would easily watch it again, let alone watch the rest of their musik videos! Hands down it's awesome and I would suggest it to anyone who likes documentaries. Replay Value: 3
Title: Happy-Go-Lucky
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: My biggest draw to this film was that it's British and Sally Hawkins is in it. There is little plot to this film but it's story is as real as life itself. It follows Poppy (Hawkins) as an elementary school teacher learning to drive. She's a free spirit, open minded and sweet and no one could have been better casted. The characters are people we've all encountered and the movie makes our average events captivating. The cinematography is mentionable and everything else technical is solid. It's worth seeing if you like dramadies. Replay Value: 3
Title: King Corn
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: Fascinating and interesting, this documentary follows Ian Chenet and Curt Ellis on their venture to research corn. That's right, you heard me, corn. They dig back to their roots in Iowa they find one county they both have ties to and decide to spend an entire year devoted to growing an acre of corn. They battle governmental prices, neighbors, labor and what happens with their crop in this surprisingly informative, real documentary. I can say that anyone who enjoys the good documentary will definitely enjoy this film but also, anyone who is interested in health should also take a peek. It's well worth it. Replay Value: 3
Title: Horton Hears A Who!
Rating: 3.5/5 Stars
Review: I love Dr. Seuss. In fact, I look down on those who don't. I believe that Dr. Seuss would have been very pleased with this film. It's funny, it's enjoyable, it's clean and most of all, it's imaginative and captivating. While it is very childish it will be hard to walk away from this film dissatisfied. Replay Value: 3
Title: Vicky Christina Barcelona
Rating: 3.5
Review: I'm not a big fan of Woody Allen to begin with but I must say that this film is his "A" game. Vicky and Cristina (Johannson/Clarkson) are two young American tourists spending a summer in Spain. While having the appearance of opposite behavior they meet an open, and ruggedly attractive, local (Bardem). As they each grow in their separate relationships with the artist they come to realize one thing: they both love him and for different reasons. Vicky is straight edge and engaged. Cristina is a sexually curious, free spirit. The artist is divorced to a vengeful similar. While these relationships and affairs take place, everyone's plates become full and the holes are dug deeper. It's well acted, well shot, humorously narrated and quite enjoyable. I must admit, however, that without Penelope Cruz casted in her best role yet, this film would have fallen apart and lost the interest of the viewers just after she was supposed to be introduced. The extra half star comes from her brilliant performance. I can easily suggest this quirky, romantic dramady to any fan of dramas. Replay Value 3.5
Title: Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: Since this one was touched by Judd Apatow, I was immediately interested, and rightfully so. Devastated, Peter (Jason Segel) takes a Hawaiian vacation in order to deal with recent break-up with his TV star girlfriend, Sarah (Kristen Bell). Little does he know Sarah's traveling to the same resort as her ex ... and she's bringing along her new boyfriend. This without-a-doubt comedy is funny from beginning to end and offers humorous aspects for all viewers. Yet I in no manner suggest this to just anyone (if you know what I'm saying (if you don't here's what I am saying: there are a lot of sex jokes in this movie)). If you like this genre then you can't miss this one. Replay Value: 3
Title: Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: From an unbiased view, I see this movie as a fine approach to science with truly great directing. Not only to the historical ties, the movie clips keep the audience attached but the numerous prestigious interviews allow for education to occur. From a biased point of view, this movie is great. I think that it is great that someone is exposing the fallacies of darwinism and its followers. I suggest this movie for any documentary lover and for anyone who believes in Intelligent Design. Title: Speed Racer
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: Oh my word. This is by far the most visually stimulating film of the past decade. It's shocking, captivating, funny and extremely over the top. The Wachowski brothers did a wonderful job of keeping the Japanese cartoon influence in the live-action adaptation. I was laughing, screaming and rolling my eyes at this movie - and would do it all over again. Granted the dialogue is super cheesy and the acting subpar but the visuals and overall delivery makes up for that which lacks. I recommend this movie to anyone who wants to be entertained and doesn't get motion sick.
Title: Surfwise
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: I've come to realize that I'm a sucker for average life. This is a well shot documentary about a captivating family: the Paskowitz. They are just average people who have an interesting story. This surfing bunch was raised in a small camper and traveled where ever and whenever they please, surfing and living life. As the kids got older they suffered problems having never had education. The dad's methods of parenting cross lines while opening the eyes of the audience to new ones. It's a good documentary and well worth the time spent. Replay Value: 3
Title: The Tracey Fragments
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: This movie caught some heat for its editing style and multi-angle shots but I see that as experimental, not an inhibitor. It's experimental, sure, but who cares about this if the movie is solid? It's a little confusing at times but is resolved in the end. The story follows 15-year-old Tracey Berkowitz (Ellen Page) on her hunt to find her brother, Sonny. After escaping out the house, having to see a shrink, and connecting with a character with some deeper problems than expected, Tracey must decide for herself what is more important, her safety or her brother. It's a little rough at times so I'm not saying this should be a family film but what I am saying is that this movie is worth watching. Replay Value: 3
Title: An American Crime
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: Following the true story of Gertrude Baniszewski and Sylvia Likens, this harsh adaptation follows the path and demise of a real american crime. With an easy story to follow, it was incredibly to watch as the intensity of the characters and the good acting kept me interested yet longing to shelter my eyes. While this movie is about an incredibly harsh topic, it flows really makes you understand what is happening as the force of the plot increases. It's good guys, it's just not everything I was expecting. Some editing problems and cinematography mediocracy make this movie nothing short of a cinematic story. It's worth seeing without a doubt but just beware.
Title: Pathology
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: This movie came highly recommended to me. It's about murders. I hope that doesn't say something about me...
ANYWAY
This is a movie about forensic pathologists who like to add a little more work in their lives - by strategically killing random people and allowing their co-workers to try and figure out how. It's a "game" to them but a concern for Dr. Grey (Milo Ventimiglia), at first. As each character falls deeper and deeper into their own sinful nature it seems that there is only one road to redemption. I would have given this shocking tale four stars had the ending not been so cheesy but hey, what can you do? Make a better ending - that's what. You will like this movie if you want a better version of "Saw." Replay Value: 2
Title: Ironman
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: Let's look at the good here: Robert Downey Jr. is back and rocking, the suit looked awesome, the dialogue made it seem a tad bit real in the style of the characters talking over each other and just seeming real, Gwneth Paltrow and Terrence Howard, sweet cheesy super hero lines. Wanting a powerful superhero movie with substance and meaning, a movie with complex characters who learn their lesson in the end, or a movie that has actually good CGI? Look elsewhere. This movie is mere entertainment and for that, "Iron Man" is without a doubt a great choice. Replay Value: 3
Title: Kabluey
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: This quirky film has its own kind of humor and is easily watchable. Especially if you like the dry, dry humor. It is pretty interesting and rare, and successful, to find a film written and directed by its star that is actually interesting and not just another ego trip. This film follows a newly accepted uncle into the babysitting task while learning to find himself, and his home. I will say that the acting, story and cinematography are awesome and admired yet as far as the humor goes for this supposed comedy, I was let down. That's not because the jokes were bad per say yet because I don't understand them. It's good though, worth seeing I'd say. Replay Value: 2.5
Title: Batman: Gotham Knight
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: "Animatrix" meets Batman. This unique piece of art is divided into 6 short animated films. Each film is somewhat tied to the others yet each are very different in action, story, animation and theme. It is very interesting to watch and holds your attention through and through. I would recommend this film to anyone who likes anime(esque) film and who likes Batman. I'd certainly watch it again with someone who liked the two. Replay Value: 3
Title: The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: A true to the book plot. While it seemed that the plot was rushed to make time for the action/battle scenes, it was all captivating. This movie was odd though. Some of the CGI was great while other times greatly lacking, and some dialogue was intelligent while at other times it seemed corny (i.e. using your movie's catchphrase 3 times is a little much for the second movie). Some cinematography was lame (as if it were his first time ever) while other times I was pleasantly distracted with how good it was. Finally while some of the acting was great, Lucy again was the only failure (yet Caspian did have his cliché moments); although I did like how since she has the special vile to rejuvenate people, we are supposed to like her. Overall a little worse than the first but I can't wait to see the next one. Replay Value: 2
Title: Futurama: The Beast With A Billion Backs
Rating: 3.5/5
Title: Get Smart
Rating: 3.5/5
Review: Following along the television show: Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) is a dumb witted spy who is trusted greatly in his organization. No other actor could have pulled this off as well as Carell did. You know you've got a good movie when your bad jokes don't take away from the movie and when you make the audience laugh even when they know what's coming. Despite it's political undertones, this movie is clean, funny, and well worth seeing, especially if you like Steve Carell. Replay Value: 2
Title: Paranoid Park
Rating: 3/5
Review: This film follows the story of a young boys involvement in a Portland murder. His skater attitude and age make him the perfect candidate for a coming-of-age film. We can tell his intelligence is superior of the stereotype and his willingness of morals is more mature than his appearance. I think we all see a little of ourselves in Gabe Nevins' performance. The story is solid, the plot is dependable and the characters are very real. What really makes this films shine is it's cinematography and editing. I would dare say that half of this movie takes place behind the character's emotions and appearances and into their form of living. There are several shots when the story is progressing, we are learning about the characters and then, all of the sudden, we are at a 6 minute slow motion shot of a skateboarder. The musik behind said shots is perfect. The movement is fluidly expert. The scenes are what makes this movie more than a film - it makes this film and artistic form of life. If you appreciate film - see this film. The average movie goer should stay away though. Replay Value: 3
Title: Rachel Getting Married
Rating: 3/5
Review: I can agree with my colleague Brian Miele on this film: "It accomplished exactly what it wanted to. It was simple and real. I felt like it was the best representation of a father's love in cinema I may have ever seen." Sure, that's all very true and I love that aspect of it but that in no way makes it an entertaining film. Yeah, if you want a indie flick that will make you know you're alive then watch this movie. If you want a good date movie or a family film, steer clear. This is the perfect indie film though. Low budget, surprisingly phenomenal acting and captivating characters all within a striking story and plot. But it's just that, a low budget indie film; it can be beaten. The extra half star come from knowing that without a DOUBT Anne Hathaway delivers one of the best performances of the year. I love the repetition of the band and realness of this film though. "I felt like it was someone's home movies" - Zak. Yes, and that's awesome. The epitome of downfall. Replay Value: 2
Review: Luke Wilson is astoundingly understated. Henry Poole (Wilson) moves into a house in his growing up neighborhood to spend what he believes are his final days. When a religious neighbor discovers a watermark that she believes is the face of Jesus, the secluded Poole becomes the talk of the community. The downfall of this already fallen man is a tale of redemption. Great story and plot but a little mundane and static a times. Could have been great. Replay Value: 2
Title: The Bridge
Rating: 3/5
Review: Pretty controversial piece. Eric Steel set up a camera at the Golden Gate Bridge for 2004 and watched closely as 24 people ended their life off of the "world's most popular suicide location." He interviewed family, people who witnessed the acts and officials. It's sad and slightly graphic but intriguing. Somewhat giving the audience an unsettling stomach but making us want to learn. Sure it's tough but is it good? Yes, it is. It's worth watching if like documentaries AND you can handle the subject matter. If you think you can't do either then definitely stay away from it. The cinematography is good and the editing is great. The subject terrifyingly enticing but not suitable for all audiences. Replay Value: 1
Title: The Foot Fist Way
Rating: 3/5
Review: I have nothing more to say than the fact that this was the most uncomfortable hour and a half of my life. The main character played by the now awesome Danny McBride is awkward, self-centered, hatable, a screw up and every other negative connotation the director wanted. I will say that this movies was exactly what Jody Hill wanted it to be and I must commend him for that. I am very excited to see more awesomeness from him and would actually suggest this to anyone, secure enough. I personally am not fit to do so again BUT overall, if you like "The Office" just because it's awkward then you will absolutely love this film. Replay Value: 2.5
Review: This out of proportion action flick about a secret, bullet bending society with its own case of secrets kept me entertained the whole time with it's humor, crazy CGI effects, and sweet fighting sequences. There were several aspects of an action movie that I've wanted to see played out and this movie finally fulfills those wants. If you like action this wild ride is in your face through and through. I wouldn't discourage anyone from seeing this one but while it is above average, there's no need to rush out. I guess the best way to describe this one would be "worth seeing eventually." Review: Rhys Darby is without a doubt, phenomenal and Jim Carrey delivers in his most traditional sense - an idiot. This movie had me chuckling throughout its entirety and smiling to the familiarity of Carrey's performance. This movie follows Carl Allen (Carrey) as he vows no cease his constant "no-ness" and being to say "YES!" to anything and everything. While this does seem a bit "Liar, Liar" esque, don't be confused. "Liar, Liar" is awesome and this one a average. It's entertaining and fun to watch so I'd suggest it for anyone looking for an easy film. Replay Value: 3
You may be asking yourself, "LARPing? What the heck?" Oh yes, who doesn't want to dress up like a Sea Elf and cast spells on decaying corpses? While this documentary is more about the people than the actual NERO division of Seattle, it is still an insightful look into this world. Title: Rambo (Rambo IV)
Rating: 3/5
Review: Surprising. I was more interested to see the evolution of John Rambo in modern times than I was to see this actual movies because I have always been intrigued by the shallowness of action characters. First Blood was sweet. I know it isn't very good but I like it. Especially since only one person dies in the entire film. 236 in this one by the way. Anyways, on to the movie. It's surprising. Sure it's action packed, it's explosive, it's bloody and it's loud... but is it good? That is the real question here. We all know action movies - their reputation almost seals every movie of the genre's fate and audience. This film however is slightly different. Maybe because I have been studying Rambo, maybe because I was in a mood for some carnage, I dunno. Who does? The point is I liked it. It's simple, it's easy to watch, it's a man-fest and if you like "BOOM!" then you'll like Rambo (IV). The plot follows John (Stallone) as he takes a boat of missionaries into a jungle war zone. Once they are missing, his mission is to rescue them, keep his reputation and battle himself for love and the wild. Okay, so maybe not that deep but you get the idea they are trying to convey. Simply put: It's fun. If you are having a guys night and need a new flick to cheer about: Rambo. If you want something with substance then why would you even consider watching something with Stallone in it in the first place? Replay Value: 3
Review: A young slacker (Shia LeBeouf) and a single mom (Michelle Monaghan) get tangled up with a terrorist plotting a political assassination. If you're looking to be entertained for two hours then this movie is for you. It's a surprising movie. I will admit that the character development was a little lacking and the story seemed a tiny bit rushed. Yet for a movie of this caliber that wasn't looking to do anything more than capture the audience, it is overall a solid film. I will admit that, while I understood the concept behind the twist, I believe it needed a bit more explanation. In a nutshell, this movie is very entertaining and you won't regret watching it.
Title: Heavy Metal In Baghdad
Rating: 3/5
Review: I must admit that I was really taken with this particular documentary - I'm a big fan of documenting every day people and that is exactly what this one is about. Not only is this about every day people who consist of the only heavy metal band in Baghdad, but of its scene in the surrounding areas and the war itself. Granted, we all know about the massive destruction that has taken place over there but it was nice to see cited facts in a way that focuses on how it affects the local people, not America's report. It's basically average but if you like heavy metal and want to learn about the war then this one is all for you, man. Replay Value: 1
Review: I'm glad to finally see several horror elements that I've longed to see in a movie well done. The plot follows a couple in a country home, trying to enjoy their expected relaxing time. They soon find they are not alone. The average acting hinders this movie greatly. Sure the scary parts are some of the scariest I've seen in a very long time, especially since the idea of this movie is maybe plausible, but it isn't really a good movie. Yes it's a good horror/thriller movie but not anything superb. Replay Value: 3
Title: 27 Dresses
Review: A single woman (Katherine Heigl) is tired of always being the bridesmaid at her friends' weddings. This time, she sets off to find her own Mr. Right. I like any movie that has characters that remind you of people you know, makes you hate the characters, then finally ends with redemption, all the while still feeling the same attitude towards those characters. Any movie that can make you feel good without changing your motif is worth seeing in my book. I'd recommend this movie to anyone looking for a dry humored chick flick. Basically guys, if you have to chose between the lesser of her two "evils", choose this one. Replay Value: 3
Title: Baby Mama
Review: While this movie was way better than I thought it would be, it was not as funny as it could have been. Especially with two sweet actresses such as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. The story follows Kate Holbrook's (Fey) attempts to have a child. Since she is unable, she finds a surrogate mother (Poehler). The story unfolds with unexpected, humorous behavior and a hidden agenda in one of the two. I will say that if you are seeing this because of the not funny previews, disregard them; while those preview parts are in the movie, there are funnier parts. I would suggest this to anyone who doesn't mind choppy editing and a fast story or to anyone who wants about three laughs to kill time. Replay Value: 3
Title: Pride And Glory
Rating: 3/5
Review: This gritty portrayal of New York's finest stars Colin Farrell, Edward Norton, Jon Voight, and Noah Emmerich as each actor delivers a powerhouse performance. The story of crooked cops versus family, as a whole, is great. Scene for scene, however, this movie has a little trouble. It seemed to me that each scene tried to be a powerfully emotional drive and at the end of it, ATTEMPTS to transition to another similar scene. This continues for the first hour or so until the story takes over and the editor woke up - then it becomes a stop & start battle between intensity and dry (and rather late) character development. That's another problem I had with this one, NO character development. With an all-star cast, it seems the director expected us to know the actors and the one dimensional police characters. It's okay, but not great; especially not as good as it could have been. Replay Value: 3
Review: Keanue Reeves made a movie other than "The Matrix" that didn't suck! YAY for him! This movie is your traditional good cop versus bad cop routine with an expected twist. It's well shot and exciting but it's entirely what you expect it to be. Enjoyable if you like action flick. Skippable if you don't. Replay Value: 2.
Title: Definitely, Maybe
Rating: 3/5
Review: This film follows one man's story to his daughter (ABY BREZ!) of his loves and who he must pick against who he picked. Obviously it's a romantic-comedy and fully lives up to the genre's expectations. It's humorous, it kept me interested and I enjoyed it as a film. There are no useless scenes, I laughed frequently and enjoyed the acting (ABY BREZ!). Overall, if you like rom-coms then you can't miss "Definitely, Maybe."
Title: The Rocker
Rating: 3/5
Review: I'm a pretty hard person to please when it comes to comedies. I don't know if it's because I'm the funniest person alive or if it's because nobody is as funny as I am. Who knows? I do. It's both. Anyways, your average comedy will make the average person laugh. It will make me laugh at it's simplicity and at my own numbness. This movie is your average comedy plus Rainn Wilson (Dwight from "The Office"). Sure his character is a little annoying and the teenagers are entirely stereotypical (singer Teddy Geiger is in the film and plays himself under a different name. Come one man...) but let's all be on the look out for Josh Gad. I am sure Cattaneo casted him due to his similarities with Jonah Hill but I think that Gad is just as funny, if not more so. The film follows an aspiring pop/rock trio who needs a drummer. Who else could fill the spot then the eccentric uncle? The film is humorous and isn't a TERRIBLE choice. However, there is no need to see it. Replay Value: 2.
Title: Kataude mashin gâru (The Machine Girl)
Rating: 3/5
Review: There is no possible way I can condone the seeing of this movie. Its gory, fiendish behavior is 100% bound to shock, scare, and horrify the average movie goer. This film follows the revenge of an orphaned, lonely school girl whose hands gets chopped off and replaced with a makeshift machine gun. It's gory, Asian and amazing. I was covering my eyes, yelling at the TV, vomiting and moving closer and closer to the screen. If you want to be entertained and don't mind 100 gallons of fake blood then watch this movie. If you can't take people's faces being shot off or swords through mouths then stay away. Replay Value: 3
Title: How To Lose Friends & Alienate People
Rating: 3/5
Review: I readily wanted to see this movie for one reason: Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz, Shaun Of The Dead). The flick follows a British writer in New York trying to win friends, the eye of a woman and a promotion. Pegg's character is classic for the actor and the rest of the individuals are well casted for the appropriate role. The camera work is fine and the dialogue is that same ole' British humour. There is nothing technical that takes away from the film by any stretch... it's just not what you expect from a story by Simon Pegg. I mean, his humor surpasses my own... usually. I thought that the jokes were predictable but nearly as much as the story and character reactions. That which makes "Shaun Of The Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" so brilliant is their British zanity and chaotic hilarity. This film left me with an extremely average taste in my mouth. There was nothing bad about it BUT there was nothing good. Sure it had it's funny parts and it probably deserves more than 3 stars but I suppose my expectations were up so high that it let me down. If you haven't heard of Pegg then start with this movie and watch the others. My bet is that you won't be as disappointed in it as I. Replay Value: 3
Title: The Ruins
Rating: 3/5
Review: With images that make you cringe, this movie is worth seeing upon rental. Although it was unlike any other horror movie I've seen in the sense of the "villain," it still left much to be desired in the sense of a script. The ending was of course lame but overall, I wouldn't stop you from seeing this movie. Basically, it's alright for a horror movie. Replay Value: 3
Title: Jack And Jill Versus The World
Rating: 3/5
Review: Jack (Prinze, Jr.) is a 30-something, routine biding, advertising exec in New York City. He is successful and stylish... and entirely bored - until he meets Jill (Hannah Lochner). In her 20s, fiery and adorable, Jill enters Jack's life like a hurricane. They meet and instantly connect, launching into a unexpected, unsurprising romance. Together they write a Manifesto of Rules to live by. Beginning with Rule 1--Be Honest. I must say that I'm glad to finally see Freddie Prinze Jr. in a decent role. I just know that there is something that we are missing in his career. Overall this movie is not half bad. Anyone looking for a good love story should consider this one. Granted, from a critics stand point there is much to be desired but overall, if you are looking for an entertaining love story that does not require any attachment, this is your movie. Replay Value: 3
Title: Drillbit Taylor
Rating: 3/5
Review: This movie follows three kids who are consistently bullied and look to hire a body guard who ends up being none other than the washed up Wilson. I was drawn to it due to the fact that it was Seth Rogen but was a tad deterred by the fact that Owen Wilson was in it. I was however, surprised by this flick. It's totally predictable and gives you the cheap laughs that we all know are tied to the genre. I was, however, pleasantly caught off guard by a few surprisingly humorous scenes. It's fun to watch if you're a public movie goer looking to be entertained but don't expect anything spectacular or Rogen-ish. Replay Value: 2
Title: Tropic Thunder
Rating: 3/5
Review: Tom Cruise is officially out of his mind. This movie is over the top, ridiculous, loud, in your face and.... average. Surprisingly average. It's obvious that Ben Stiller directed this flick in that it has "his" humor. If you liked any other film he was in then you'll like this one. As for Jack Black, he severely let me down on this one. I mean, he's a funny guy but drug jokes? Seriously? Jay Baruchel was as cool as ever. Steve Coogan NEVER disappoints. Brandon T. Jackson let me down with the fact that his biggest joke was a gay one. Matthew McConaughey is the exact same person (even though he has the funniest character in the movie) and Tom Cruise is CRAZY! OKAY. Now to the good stuff. One word: Robert Downey, Jr. It's all about this super star in this dud of a flick. He is the sole reason for the extra half star. Anyways, if you like Ben Stiller then see this movie... then go bury your head in the sand. Replay Value: 3
Title: Mad Money
Rating: 3/5
Review: Although this movie was nothing special, I will admit that I was on edge the whole time. With a story about a heist with unexperienced masterminds behind the project, this nerve-racker is enough to make you clinch your fist but isn't anything that you'd want to watch over and over. I will also say that you can pretty much know what to expect from Keaton and Latifah since they play the same role every time but even still this one is worth watching. Replay Value: 2
Title: Zack And Miri Make A Porno
Rating: 3/5
Review: Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks in the same movie! Good. Kevin Smith directed this. Bad. Kevin Smith wrote this. Bad. It has traditional sex jokes? Seriously? Dad gum it. Lifelong friends Zack (Rogen) and Miri (Miri) look to solve their cash flow problems by recruiting a motley cast and crew to make an adult film. As the cameras roll, the duo discovers more about each other than expected. So did I - that this movie is marginal. Even with two of my favorite comedians in the script, they failed to make this movie astounding. Watchable and enjoyable, by all means; especially if it's boy's night in. Replay Value: 2
Title: Meduzot (Jellyfish)
Rating: 3/5
Review: It's simple, it's unique, it's enjoyable but in no way is this movie memorable. It also would only appeal to a very limited audience: fans of mediocre foreign dramas. The characters are very real which adds an aspect of emotional attachment, if we could just figure out what to attach it to. The film follows two girls searching for a lost little one while bonding in the process and also, a newly wed couple (with a jealous wife who just broke her leg) dealing with a writer in their hotel. It's spastic at times but does deal with these people's urge to achieve communication and affection proficiently. Replay Value: 2.5
Title: Miracle At St. Anna
Rating: 3/5
Review: Let me first start out by saying that I respect Spike Lee while I do not always agree or understand his reasoning. That being said this movie was very average for such a famous director. The acting was great, even despite all the racial undertones. It's shot very well, it provokes thought, is scary at times and is an interesting take on racism and war. The film follows the Buffalo Soldiers in WWII - an all black brigade. Specifically it focuses on 4 soldiers who are on a mission in Italy. There is plenty of suspense and character development which leads the viewer to expect a concluding ending. The plot is well developed up until it's climax in which holes and loops become evident. There is no solid conclusion and every final element is an assumption. Sure the cinematography and sound are great and technically speaking this movie is solid. From a story stand point there is much to be desired. Enjoy this if you can but I wouldn't necessarily suggest it. Replay Value: 3
Title: Quid Pro Quo
Rating: 3/5
Review: I must say that I was VERY intrigued with the idea behind this movie. The idea of a paralyzed man discovering an underground ring of wanna-be paraplegics sounds like an emotional roller coaster. I was disappointed that this was only a small part of the movie and that it mainly focused on the main character's relationship with one of these wanna-bes. Granted it was still a wild philosophy and way of life so it was still entertaining. From a cinematic stand point there is not anything too impressive here although the editing is superb. There are, however, holes left unfilled and unexplained characters. Overall, it's average; a good drama with it's flaws and merits. Replay Value: 2
Title: Charlie Bartlett
Rating: 3/5
Review: I went into this flick with higher expectations than I should have had but I must admit it was still good. Charlie Bartlett (Anton Yelchin) is a child with a psychologist who is the new kid in school... again. This time, however, decides to take his high school fate into his own hands and becomes a child psychologist - the kid is a hit and the unhappy principal notices. The characterization is notable and the dynamic characters are enjoyable so overall this was entertaining to watch. There are a few good laughs and the cliche coming-of-age story is still untarnished so if you like this genre, watch this film. Replay Value: 2
Title: Smart People
Rating: 3/5
Review: An amusing movie with clever and memorable characters. The uncle (Thomas Haden Church) is by far the funniest character; I wished I'd have thought of him first. Ellen Page is great as always and Dennis Quaid does surprisingly good as a prude. This movie will entertain you once, so if that is what you're looking for then I would suggest this one. Replay Value: 2.
Title: Meet Bill
Rating: 3/5
Review: This is a pretty average movie and several plot aspects left the audience wanting more closure but overall it isn't a bad film by any stretch. It is always nice when you can see a physical change in a characters life (i.e. weight loss to win a girl) so that's another nice aspect. It's worth watching but certainly won't be up for any awards. Replay Value: 2
Title: Mamma Mia!
Rating: 3/5
Review: I must first say that I saw this movie alone on a weekday in a theater packed with either groups of girls or couples. Based on the broadway play, this story pertains to a young, newly engaged girl trying to find her real father - from 3 VERY different options. That being said I also enjoy ABBA a lot. With both of those out of the way, it's hard for me to accurately describe my feelings about this movie. It's zany, loud, and has three slow motion scenes; AWESOME! The townspeople are hilarious, Pierce Brosnan singing was a treat, it seemed as if they shot every scene on the first take and the music is... ABBA. I will say from a teenage male critic's stand point, there isn't anything special here. Yet from a woman of any age who enjoys musicals, this movie will have you laughing and buying ABBA: Gold in a heartbeat. Replay Value: 2
Title: Cloverfield
Rating: 3/5
Review: Okay, let me first say that I absolutely love the idea of using one handheld camera to film a movie making the audience feel as if the events were actually happening as they watched. I also love the fact that you see just enough of the monster to keep you interested and wondering. On the other hand, there were several instances with poor editing, sound effects and mistakes that could have easily been fixed with a few views before release. Overall, somewhat fun but nothing groundbreaking. Replay Value: 2
Title: The Business Of Being Born
Rating: 3/5
Review: This documentary on housewives versus hospital deliveries is nothing short of an eye-opening experience. The movie follows woman who have decided to use a housewife and their experiences versus past experiences in the hospitals. Even though the hard facts are view, the real life experiences make this persuasive documentary a must see for anyone interested in the OB/GYN field or those interested in documentaries. Replay Value: 2.5
Title: Quantum Of Solace
Rating: 3/5
Review: It's difficult to follow up one of the greatest action movies/the greatest Bond film of all time but Marc Forster didn't even come close. The simplicity of this story is made so by it's unexplained details and rushed manner. The action sequences are sweet but as they should be. It's an action movie. That doesn't mean you get to cram in fun and leave out plot (we're not Michael Bay here). The plot follows a revengeful Bond who is chasing an unexplained organization who is trying to seize a country's resources. Despite the hype and awesomeness of Daniel Craig, this sequel can't even be on the shelf next to its predecessor. Replay Value: 2
Title: Shotgun Stories
Rating: 3/5
Review: Weird, weird movie. This one takes 100% of it's approach on the conflict of everyday characters. There is moderate, ordinary struggle, average characters and a witty screenplay. It's well edited and an overall enjoyable movie. I don't know if I'd suggest it to EVERY one but for anyone who can actually appreciate a movie's attempt, it's worth watching. Replay Value: 2
Title: Made Of Honour
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: Okay, so take every single chick flick you've ever seen. Cool, now you've seen "Made Of Honor." Boy (Patrick Dempsey) and girl (Michelle Monaghan) are best friend. Girl gets married. Guy realizes he loves her. Tries to break up engagement. This traditional romantic-comedy had me on the edge of my seat in hopes of the good guy prevailing, laughing at the cheap sexist jabs, yelling at my sister for putting me through the good guy agony and finally regretting getting so tied into the traditional, predictable, cheesy love story. If you are a girl, you will like this film. If you are a guy probably won't. If you are a man, just see it anyways so you can understand how far and effective being nice is yet how at times you need to seize what's right in front of you. Overall, if you like chickadee flickadees, see it. Replay Value: 2
Title: Sex And The City: The Movie
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: This movie is exactly what it wanted to be. It incorporated every aspect that makes the show appealing. The characters are true and the story is typically pleasing. Even if you do not enjoy the show you will still find this love story of sister like comradery amusing - as long as you are a female. The story follows the strengthening relationships of the girls as they all reach climactic moments in their lives. It's exactly what Sex And The City is, but 2 hours long. Sure it's bearable but unless you are a die hard fan, you can miss it. Replay Value: 2
Title: Marley & Me
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: This is the movie that made me slightly respect Owen Wilson a little more... thanks to the fact that he wasn't a total idiot in this film. Sure he played his normal role but more maturity (is Owen the new Luke?) gave his role more believability and a slight memorability. Anyways, surprisingly Marley & Me follows the relationship between Aniston and Wilson, not the dog. Sure the previews paint this flick to be a heartfelt puppy show but in reality, this movie is more about how to deal with a struggling relationship than how to train your dog. Sure the dog represents simultaneous actions (i.e. the actions of the dog are symbolic of the relationship) but seriously guys, don't be misled. Sure the flick is good but don't expect anything more than to be entertained and emotionally attached. This movie is nothing more than it presents UNLESS it convicts you to examine your own relationships - beware though. This means you have to put up with the crap jokes though. Nothing to say in regards to the technical aspects of the film. Regardless, it's slightly below average but still okay to watch. Replay Value: 2
Title: Gran Torino
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: Okay, okay, I get it. Clint Eastwood is Bad-A but why would such a renowned actor, producer and director choose such TERRIBLE acting? I'm not a racist person and try very hard to uphold equality and avoid stereotypes. However, this movie was 97.5% Asian, 1.5% white, and 1% black. The acting in this movie was 99.5% terrible, atrociously distracting even. The ONLY "good" actor in the film was Eastwood himself. Sure the cinematography was mentionable and the editing well done but I cannot tell you how terrible the acting was in this movie. I found myself laughing at Her and Vang's "emotional" performances and too distracted by everyone else in the film to laugh at the jokes. This film follows the story of a veteran who fought against the Japanese who ends up living in a predominately Asian part of town. The conflicts are obvious as Eastwood realizes his duty to protect the neighborhood from its own kind. If this film had better acting, even decent acting, it would have been great. The story sure is - why couldn't the movie have been? You can easily miss this one UNLESS you want to see Eastwood cry and be the only man possible to put a beer on a coaster and still look hard. Title: The House Bunny
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: Anna Faris returns as a voluptuous ex-Playboy bunny looking for a positive outlet for her... uh... talents. She decides to become the house mother for a failing sorority - if Zeta Tau Zeta doesn't get enough pledges by next semester they loose their house. Every girl, odd in their own way, combines their intelligence to come up with differing fund raisers, parties, and the like. As Shelley (Faris) learns what it's like to not be cool, ZTZ learns what it's like to fit the mold while still being an individual. I hate to call this a coming of age movie, so I won't. I will say this - the characters are dynamic. It's enjoyable if you're a teenage girl but if you like jokes then skip this movies. Sure it definitely had some funny parts, the ratio of not funny jokes to funny ones was easily 10:1 if not more. Replay Value: 2
Title: 21
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: The idea of this movie is pretty cool since it is based on a true story - Ivy League students risk their luck, and scholarships, at the blackjack tables. I was glad to see Jim Strugess in a better role than the opportunities given last year ("Across The Universe" sucks). I will say that this movie is nothing special but is a movie for the masses. There is hardly any character development and nothing special in the cinematography department nor in the transitions. To be honest the editing is pretty bad. Overall this movie lacks any reason to keep you entertained unless you want to see Spacey rock another role (even if it did feel like a repeat). Replay Value: 3
Title: Cheung Gong 7 hou (CJ7)
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: So Stephen Chow is a pretty famous director and when I heard about "CJ7" I figured why not? While I can say I was not disappointed I can also say that I was unimpressed. This is an Asian comedy that follows Dicky, a poor elementary school boy with a new present. The present is an alien called CJ7. The story is classic and the acting is pretty good even for asian children but it's just so, so weird. The humor is hilarious because it's random and out of control, the plot is fine and some characters are memorable. If you've enjoyed Chow's other films then I'd say you can't miss this one. If you don't really like Chinese humor then skip over it quickly. If you don't know - watch it only to see the fat kids fight and Jiao Xu's expressions. Replay Value: 2
Title: Flash Of Genius
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: The plot line to this movie really intrigued me when I first heard about it. It follows Robert Kearns (Greg Kinnear) and his invention in the blinking eye wiper or as we know it, the intermittent windshield wiper. He invents this masterpiece that Ford Motor Company immediately sweeps interest in. After he makes a deal and leaves his idea with them they steal it and leave Kearns high and dry. His fight is his legacy as much as the invention is. It's a great, great story and a true one at that. The characters are static but real and the acting par. The first half of the movie is POORLY edited and almost misleading. The second half however, when the court case begins, this is when the movie really gets good. The first half is so bad though that it simply ruins the rest. It's overall okay but really, not worth it because of the poor editing. Replay Value: 2
Title: Over Her Dead Body
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: Paul Rudd is hilarious and is the only reason worth seeing the movie. Sure the cute jokes will make you laugh but as far as a good movie goes this one is not it. I mean, what are you expecting - It's a movie about a girl who dies on her wedding day, the husband hasn't gotten over her for years, the sister sends him to a psychic to contact her, that fails, the sister gives the psychic the dead-fiancé's diary in order to make Rudd believe their "connecting," he believes it, the psychic falls for him, BUT WHAT'S THIS?!? The dead-fiancé has come back as a ghost that only the psychic can see?!? WHAT?! CRAZY!!! Not really actually. It's just a cute chick-flick that will entertain you for a while but leave with nothing more than a temporary smile on your face. It's a good date movie, let's put it like that. Worth seeing if you like chick-flick rom-coms or if you and your bf/gf/potential life partner need a movie to watch (this is one you want to watch though and not just make out the whole time. It's not that terrible. Watch "Ghost" for that one). Replay Value: 2
Title: Diary Of The Dead
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: As eager as I was to see this movie and as much as I wanted to this one to rock my socks, it failed me as a movie yet not as a Romero experience. The story follows a group of kids with a handheld camera, running from the brink of a zombie outbreak. It had all the classic gore that Romero brings yet not the classic style. I love the idea that it's all from a handy cam point of view but this portrayal was a mockery of the style. Yeah it's cool but don't have your characters lose value or depth because their "handling the camera." The acting was bad, the editing was lame and the overall movie was a disappointment. As a movie, 2 stars, as a Romero experience, 3 stars. Replay Value: 2
Title: You Don't Mess With The Zohan
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: The extra half star comes from the fact that Adam Sandler doesn't suck in this film. Despite the dozens of penis jokes, terrorism jokes and stereotypes I did laugh a couple of times. If you like him, you'll like this film. If you're like me and don't like him you MIGHT be surprised but in reality, it's not worth it. Replay Value: 2
Title: Hancock
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: I will start by saying that this film did surprise me by the fact that it wasn't terrible.... if you can make it past the first 20-30 mundane minutes. Within the first 2 minutes of the film Hancock, (Will Smith), an outlandish, bad with people super hero trying to find his place in life, says "What'chu want, a cookie?" and when that happened I wanted to be out so badly. There were several jokes that were racially appealing with mindless quotes that we've all heard before. When Jason Bateman entered the story however I became interested and it actually took my by surprise how well the story began to unfold. The acting became good and a plot developed and I realized, "I'm now watching a movie and not BET Def Jam Comedy anymore." I will agree with critic Will Crosswell, "If you think that you're gonna get a 'new kind of superhero' or walk away 'blown away,' then save your $10 and wait for The Dark Knight." Overall it's enjoyable but I don't really have a desire to see it again. Replay Value: 1
Title: Never Back Down
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: With choppy editing and sappy characters, this movie left me laughing at some points and cringing at others... although I don't know if I was supposed to be experiencing those emotions at the given scenes. The characters, especially Cam Gigandet's, were sappy and over exaggerated and the editing was poor and slightly distracting. However, the sound and visuals were quite mastered. I was happy to see the "x-ray bone" shot done again and the music fade stay with the soundtrack. Overall, if you're looking to be entertained and literally nothing more, watch this film. If you're looking for substance, just watch a UFC match then watch "Fight Club." Actually, just go watch "Fight Club" anyways. Replay Value: 1
Title: La Misma Luna (The Same Moon)
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: I'm not racist but seriously, this Mexican flick is terrible. It's super cheesy, terrible directed and follows a "plot" with several loopholes. The extra half star comes from the fact that this is the best Mexican movie I've ever seen. Don't even bother. Replay Value: 1
Title: Super High Me
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: I was interested in the idea of this movie but at the end, it seemed there was no redeeming value nor did it feel as if I gained any real information. Sure it's funny at times but overall you're not missing much. Based on the hit documentary "Super Size Me," Doug Benson decides to go a month without smoking marijuana followed by a month of constant smoking. He performs the same tests each month and compares the results. Unless you just love Doug Benson or weed, you can afford to miss out on this one. Replay Value: 1
Title: Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: So I'm a rather big Michael Cera fan. I love the fact that my generation has the perfect awkward teenager. It's always a hit... when it's properly used. Adequate character development is necessary for each and every movie even if you have an actor that plays the same character over and over. Let's take Jim Carey for example. Sure most of his characters are the same, static and use the same facial expressions but most of the movies he is in allow for the audience to learn who his latest character is. Ace Ventura and Lloyd Christmas and The Grinch are very similar but they are each an individual. Now Michael Cera can make any situation awkward in films and he's darn good at it - as he should be! It's funny! But letting our previous knowledge of this youngster count as your movie's character development... that's not allowed. Sorry Peter Sollett. The rest of the movie is indie-humor with a killer soundtrack but nothing more. The characters aren't memorable, no dialogue or one liners will get the crowd talking. The humor is present but scarce in it's content. Everything about it, technically speaking (cinematography, editing, sound editing, etc.), is average. So this movie is good if you and your girl/boy want to watch a time-passer with good music. Other than that, not really worth a see. Replay Value: 2
Title: Noise
Rating: 2.5/5
Review: "Noise" is a film about one man's conquest to eliminate the noise of NYC. I gotta admit it was very nice to see Tim Robbins in a new film but why so much sex? This movie was funny and captivating as it started but once the useless sex (and by useless I mean that it in no way added to character or plot development) was introduced, the movie became more and more that, a movie. It was no longer an exciting journey of one man's downfall, it was an average movie with your predictable sex scenes. I will admit that Robbins is really good in this film as is every other actor and the editing is very enjoyable but for the most part, this movie would have been a lot funnier and more enjoyable without the sex.
Title: Teeth
Rating: 2/5
Review: This is definitely one of the craziest and most shocking movies I've ever seen. I screamed, I laughed, I repeated several times. This movie is by no means for the faint of heart but if you can work up the courage, by all means. Embark on the disgustingly captivating story that is Teeth. Since I can't describe this movie without being disgusting, here it goes: the plots follows a girl who has vengeful teeth in her vagina, or vagina dentata as it's called in the movie. The acting stunk, the soundtrack was average, and there were no cinematic elements to set it apart. Yet I keep finding myself loving this movie. Overall, I think the director wanted us to focus on the craziness of the "action" creativity, originality and overall story rather than it's lack of acting skills and lack of him knowing what to do with the ending. I really liked it. Replay Value: 4
Title: Bedtime Stories
Rating: 2/5
Review: "So let's make a movie which combines fantasy with reality via a child's wishes. Wait... wait I have a better idea. Let's make a movie and just abandon all reality. Yeah. That'll be hilarious. Let's hire Adam Sandler too." This is what I imagine Adam Shankman saying as he developed this movie. The plot follows a dead end uncle who has a non-sequential history with his current hotel employment. He ends up having to babysit his niece and nephew in the process and their inputs to his bedtime stories become reality. Sandler tries to make this work in his favor. Blah blah blah. If you're 12 years old you'll like this film. Otherwise, please spare yourself. The only exception for seeing this film is if you like Adam Sandler (which I will slap you for) or if you want to see Russell Brand, the british guy from "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", rock the house with his minor role. Title: Twilight
Rating: 2/5
Review: Okay, so let me first vent about how I am so against calling these creatures "vampires." I know monsters but I've NEVER seen a normal vampire with this much strength, speed, or tree-climbing ability OR SUN RESISTANCE!
That being said: The movie.
The story line, I'll admit, was clever. The plot, however, was not. How can a story and plot differ you may ask? Well, the story was: girl falls for a boy who together must overcome forbidden love. The plot: a girl falls for a vampire whose "family" consists of other "vegetarian vampires." See the difference? The dialogue is mockable and definitely worthy of ridicule. Let's just take a few snippets: "You're like my own personal brand of heroin," or "Hold on tight, spider-monkey," or my personal favorite, "Tell everyone at home how much it hurts!" You may be thinking to yourself, 'perhaps in context...' NO! Just imagine the terrible... TERRIBLE acting that coincided with these, and many others. The cinematography is lame and actually had me squinting my eyes in curiosity to why the director would make such a mistake with the style of some shots. Unless you love the books and don't care about any cinematic elements more than a good "story,' do not see this movie. If you are about anything pertaining to movies you will heed my advice. If you're a sixteen year old girl you won't even be reading this since you'll be in line for your fourth viewing.
Review: When a rebelliously controlled student enrolls in the elite school of the arts, both her style and attitude clash forces with the already existing teams. Briana Evigan joins up with a team of outcasts and forms a killer dance team incorporating everyone's distinct style into the mix. The dancing is sweet, there is no doubt about that. The overly dramatic elements and unrealistic acting/dialogue are expected and ever pleasant. If you liked dancing movies, see this film. Replay Value: 2
Title: What Happens In Vegas
Rating: 2/5
Review: This movie follows an unexpected Vegas marriage between Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz. When they awake to find out their drunken mistake they both decide to work it out - for only one reason though. One of them won a huge jackpot after playing the other's quarter the night before. The unhappy pair try to undermine each other and get their hands on the money through therapy and zany antics. Yet, I don't know what they were thinking for the first 40-60 minutes of this movie because they were terrible. With so long of there being nothing funny, I didn't know when to laugh when it took a turn at the rising action. When they finally decided to start treating this like a chick-flick instead of trying to make Ashton Kutcher look funny (impossible I know), it turned out to be marginal. Overall, pretty bad; not funny, predictable and not funny... wait I said it twice. It deserves it. Replay Value: 1
Title: Fool's Gold
Rating: 2/5
Review: So it's official, I don't like Matthew McConaughey. If you like the role McConaughey plays in everything he always does then you'll probably like this one too. As for myself, the average acting and annoying characters made me like this movie less and less as it went on. The jokes weren't funny but at least we got to see Malcolm-Jamal Warner back in action and with a Jamaican accent none the less! Overall, you can skip this one. Replay Value: 1
Title: The Forbidden Kingdom
Rating: 2/5
Review: I sorta felt like I was watching a play the whole time with this terrible acting. The special effects are kind of cool but overall, this is a movie made for money with no purpose. "The Forbidden Kingdom" follows the story of a young boy who finds a sacred staff and gets teleported through time in order to return it to its rightful owner. If you love Jackie Chan or Jet Li and you love flying Asians with phenomenally surprising martial arts powers then go for it. If you want a story with a lame kid actor or a not so surprising twist then go for it. If you want to not be entertained by a cheesy American martial arts movie then go for it. Replay Value: 2
Title: Futurama: Bender's Big Game
Rating: 2/5
Review: The worst of the "season five is just a bunch of movies that don't relate" idea from Groening. I'm a big Futurama fan and love everything else that has come out. This, however, is lame. The idea is that Bender has no imagination and accidentally creates a virtual "dungeons & dragons"-esque world that teleports everyone we love from the show into it. How it happens is never explained and why the movie is made with no funny jokes is never explained either. I laughed less than 6 times for this 1.5+ hour film. I laugh more than that in a normal 20+ min episode. If you love the series, skip this one and keep your faith in it. I wish I had. Replay Value: 1
Title: Fireproof
Rating: 2/5
Review: Okay, so I know you're supposed to look past the terrible acting, emotionless cinematography and lacking script/story for the deeper message but let me save you the trouble. Christ saves and keep your marriage healthy by being selfless. There, now you won't waste your time or money and you get the message they were trying to convey. Replay Value: 1
Title: Birds Of America
Rating: 2/5
Review: Matthew Perry is awesome but this is nothing more marginal "comedy" with plenty of character development but not a whole lot of plot. This story of siblings and the significant other is, in the end, not really worth watching. I'm not going to again anyways. Replay Value: 1
Title: Flawless
Rating: 2/5
Review: The biggest problem with this movie is Demi Moore. While she's never been great, she really falters here. You cannot once feel her emotion or involvement in the movie - she feels detached, like it's any other job. The plot is clunky and lazily structured and the story line hits us with an underwhelming finale. Flawless only stays watchable thanks to Caine. Replay Value: 1
Title: Stop-Loss
Rating: 2/5
Review: My main draw to this film was that I heard that was "The greatest way for the current generation to understand the Iraqi war" and that it was directed by Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry). All the guys in the movie are super buff and stereotypical military personalities. All the girls are attractive and dramatic. It's an MTV Films production if you haven't already guessed. The story follows Sgt. Brandon King (Phillippe) as he is supposed to be discharged and allowed to go back home. Happy, King never sees the potential of being "stop lost" and is ordered back into active duty in Iraq. Hating this more than anything in his life he goes awol and heads to Washington to complain. Of course he is delayed by his wife not understanding, his best friend and fellow army member who continually punches and yells at him, and his family who annoyingly begs him to come home. He finally finds a way to escape the country since D.C. didn't work out and... does he take it!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!? OMGZ! Let's watch and find out! No, you don't have to. He goes back into the army because it's the "right thing to do" or whatever. The plot has holes and is nothing more than a satire/mockery of the military and it's rules. It's not really worth watching if you catch my drift. Sure it's nice to learn about the reality, psychotic tendencies and PTSD of army members who have served in Iraq but as far as the movie goes it's not worth seeing. Learning about their behavior is the only reason I gave this movie 2 stars. If you want to learn about their behavior or the influence of the war on their lives then heck yeah watch it. Or even if you're in the military you should watch it as well. If you want a good movie, steer clear. Replay Value: 1
Title: Flashbacks Of A Fool
Rating: 2/5
Review: I expected this film to have Daniel Craig in it for more than 10% of the time since he was on the cover but do not be fooled. This movie is about the childhood of the character Daniel Craig plays. It's overall a tad disappointing in the fact that it's predictable, the acting is subpar and there is nothing that makes it stand out. Sure it's a good story but as for plot, not much at all. Not really worth it to be honest.
Title: A Raisin In The Sun
Rating: 2/5
Review: A made for TV movie based on a play. In fact, no screen play was ever written. This movie is basically a play (from an actual teleplay script) that has different angles - in more ways than one: the acting. My goodness. P. Diddy isn't my favorite artist but his ability to act? Totally predictable and marginally believable. In fact, the only one in this movie is none other then Phylicia Rashad from The Cosby Show. You might enjoy this film if you like plays, but I don't know if I can say that because I personally enjoy theater. Replay Value: 1
Title: Otis
Rating: 2/5
Review: Let me begin by saying, "Daniel Stern is hilarious." That being said let me also say, "There is no reason to watch this movie." It starts out creepy with quirky comments to "lighten" the mood, continues to be creepy, then just goes nuts on itself with gore from a psychotic family. Just hearing what the family talks about is disgusting enough but still, there is no reason to watch this movie - there is no redeeming value and it is not entertaining. Sure it has its funny parts (as all comedies do) but the ridiculous cinematography and first hour are just too average to like this movie. I wouldn't watch it again nor would I suggest it to anyone unless you just love dirty, gross, violence "jokes." Even still - watch "Hot Fuzz" or "Shaun Of The Dead" if you're into that. They are actually good. Replay Value: 0
Title: Naissance des Pieuvres (Water Lilies)
Rating: 2/5
Review: First off: It's French. If you know French movies, this one fits the cut. There is random nudity and casual sex through and through. The story is somewhat pertinent to the fact of the stress of being one's self at an early age. Accepting people for who they are while still being yourself is the struggle shown through this flick but it is not done so in a way that makes you realize the struggle. The acting is sufficient, the soundtrack of no worthy remembrance, and cinematography nothing of note. The only thing good about this movie is the fact that the setting was perfect for each scene. The fact of the matter is that this movie is nothing more than Sciamma's attempt at exemplifying a struggle. Granted learning the lesson of keeping your true friends is one to know but making the audience sit through pointless character, non redeeming character development is not the way to inform. I would not watch this movie again and I don't even suggest it to anyone who doesn't like French cinema. Replay Value: 0
Title: Max Payne
Rating: 1.5/5
Review: "Based on a video game." These words of death are always a clear sign to movie goers that disappointment is imminent. I'm a pretty big fan of the video games so I definitely wanted to see this film when I heard about it. I now regret my decision. This film is terrible. It honestly deserves one star but the extra 1/2 is because I like the idea of video game moves and I like Max Payne - do not be fooled by it. This flick follows Detective Max Payne - A renegade cop out for revenge. There is but one thing positive to mention cinematically here: one shot that lasted about 4 seconds and wasn't even well used. The camera was attached to the held gun and it looked really cool except Payne (Wahlberg) was just spinning in an already cleared hallway. The editing is terrible, the sound is below average at best and the art direction is near nonexistent. Everything was so freaking dark! I get it, Max Payne is tormented by demons and his past so we have to make the movie goers feel his pain. NO! You failed there pal (John Moore also directed the 2006 remake of The Omen if that hints towards anything). Now, as far as the video game to movie transition goes: no painkillers, one (poorly placed) bullet time shot and no creepy dreams! The whole story revolves around Payne trying to avenge his wife so at least they got that part right. The plot, however, is atrocious. A hallucinogenic drug that somehow leads back to a major pharmaceutical company that Michelle Payne worked for. The twists are expected, the ending a huge let down and the movie a dud. Avoid this one at all costs. Even if it means killing someone. Replay Value: 1
Title: Meet Dave
Rating: 1.5/5
Review: So it's Eddie Murphy. That alone should explain it all. However, I must pursue. The story line is average: A small group of aliens (whose captain is non-other than Murphy) land on planet Earth in a ship (which is non-other than a human sized Murphy). The dialogue is so lame, especially the racially directed parts. By this I mean, having a black guy work in the tongue and as "Dave" begins to eat whole hot dogs in a contest, have them zoom over the mouth worker's face to where he can barely taste them in order to say "Hey, cana brother get sume bar-b-que sauce over heya?" Many other stereotypes insist throughout the movie including gays and a generalization of woman. The humor is cheap, the plot is lacking, the cinematography aspect is non-existent and the movie stinks. I mean, this is the same guy who did "The Shaggy Dog" with Tim Allen and "Norbit" with Edidie Murphy and unless you love that junk, run away quickly.
Title: The Day The Earth Stood Still
Rating: 1.5/5
Review: Keanu Reaves in his best role yet! An emotionless, static, boring alien! ACE! Seriously, this movie is terrible. I never saw the original unfortunately but I imagine that the CGI is just as good as it is here. The go green message is present in both movies I know but why does it have to be so... there? This is seriously not even worth it. The film follows an alien encounter that threatens the Earth's existence. No big deal. Replay Value: 0
Title: Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay
Rating: 1.5/5
Review: Your typical sex jokes with lots of "weed is cool" messages. The only funny scene is the final one(President Bush smoking the blunt was pretty durn funny), once you've been forced to sit through agony and cheap jokes. Other than that it's just so-so. In all actuality, that scene may only have seemed funny in retrospect to the rest of the humorless comedy. Oh well, a bust in my opinion but if you liked the first one or you like the whole lame, non-Apatow, sex-comedy series then you'd like it. Replay Value: 1
Title: Step Brothers
Rating: 1.5/5
Review: Okay let me track this movie for you: It starts out strong and in your face (awesome), it slowly dies down story wise but the joke continue to roll (understand able for a comedy) then it sucks (hard) and doesn't pick back up until 40 minutes later only to finish well below how it started (yet still strongly enough). So if you are looking for a movie with no plot and cheap, dirty jokes (that you can hear just by hanging out with your dirty friend that thinks he's always HILARIOUS) then have at it. If you want a real comedy with depth and quotable lines then skip this one. I will add however that this is the best Ferrel comedy in a while so at least it's a step in the right direction? ::sigh:: Replay Value: 1
Title: Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Rating: 1.5/5
Review: I must admit that I knew going into this movie that I would regret it. Within the first 5 minutes my suspicions were assured. I must also admit that I have no respect for George Lucas anymore and will be incredibly hesitant to see his next film regardless of the affiliate. Granted, he only co-wrote and produced this one but he still allowed it to happen. How much more pain and agony must we watch Star Wars suffer Lucas? Not only that, but the dialogue was one of the worst parts of the film. Any sane person who saw Episode I, II, and III remembers how terrible the acting and dialogue was. Well imagine all the terrible lines they cut out and you've got 80% of the lines for this movie adapted to the Clone Wars Era. That leads me to my next point, why pick this era? Why even make it animated? I will admit that I watched the animated volumes back in 2003 and actually enjoyed them but this was painful. Another aspect that deducted was the fact that Samuel L. Jackson was the only returning voice and he only has 4 lines in the whole movie. I say that maybe this movie actually deserves 2 stars but the extra half-star loss comes from the fact that this movie officially ruins the new franchise. How can Lucas not realize that the past 3 episodes were nothing more than average and even less than that at times? If you ask me, don't even bother with any of them except for the original three (IV, V, & VI). I know I'll never suggest any of the new ones again. Shame on you George Lucas - and as for Dave Filoni (director), you just see if I ever see another of your movies. I know one thing is for certain, no way am I watching the soon-to-follow animated TV series. Replay Value: 0
Title: The American Mall
Rating: 1.5/5
Review: So a girl and I watched this movie because she likes "High School Musical." Let me say that even though I can't stand that one either I would GLADLY watch that one over this one EVERY time. This movie was atrocious. The singing is exactly how you expect it to be and the acting even worse. The cinematography is average at best, the sound is off, and the costumes outrageous. The story hardly makes sense and the plot even less than that. Autumn Reeser is in it so I thought "Oh cool, The O.C. girl!" but no, she is terrible in this one. Not as bad as the main characters (and their lame friends) but still bad. The story follows a singing janitor in a mall where an aspiring piano playing singer/songwriter catches his eye. Of course they can't be together or give each other what the other needs to succeed so thus lies the conflict - love or success? With misleading editing, incoherent plot lines and terrible acting makes this movie a TOTAL bust. The reason for the extra half star is because the transitions from day to night are actually pretty cool. However, let this not distract you - it's terrible. Honestly. T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E! Title: The Happening
Rating: 1.5/5
Review: Let me start off by saying that this movie is absolutely terrible and I would immediately lose respect for you if you admitted otherwise. That being said, obviously this is the weakest Shyamalan movie and one of the weakest I've seen in a long time. While the first 5 minutes or so are awesome and terrifyingly action packed, the rest of the movie (disregarding a few more 6 second action sequences here and there) is terrible, slow and is literally a slap to the face of moviegoers. Okay I get it, M. Night thinks he the man, whatever, this movie is down right bad. The intense parts are almost humorous with the terrible acting at which I was surprised. I love Leguzamo, Wahlberg and Deschanel in most of their other roles but in this film, the only way I could accept such a poor job is if Shyamalan directly told them to suck. Don't waste your money, even if you are a fan of his work. Replay Value: 0
Title: 10,000 B.C.
Rating: 1.5/5
Review: There was no background story and very little character development thereby making several scenes that didn't makes sense (i.e. characters that were supposed to be pivotal but were just distracting). The story follows the time of 10,000 B.C. and the lifestyle in the time. The acting was lame, the CGI slightly unbelievable and the characters static. The action is marginal and overall, this movie was not worth it at all and I would not suggest itl. Replay Value: 1
Title: Poultygeist: Night Of The Chicken Dead
Rating: 1.5/5
Review: A fast food restaurant built on sacred Indian burial ground inadvertently unleashes a horde of vengeful, supernatural chicken zombie demons on the local population; gore-soaked social satire and horrific hi-jinks ensue. If you can make it past the first dull hour and 20 minutes, the final 20 are a hilarious blood bath. Be wary of singing, excessive nudity and "jokes" though. Actually, just run away. Replay Value: 1
Title: Saw V
Rating: 1/5
Review: Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. This movie is so terrible. In case you guys don't remember, I've been a SOMEWHAT fan of the "Saw"s. As far as modern gore/horror goes, they aren't bad. As far as movies go... well... Anyways, let's tear this sucker apart. The acting - worst so far (which is saying something for a modern horror), the story - TOTALLY lacking, the twist - wait... wait what? There was a twist!?! The screenplay - cheesy and lame, it almost took away from the "movie", and finally, the gore the (supposedly) whole reason you see this movie - let me just go ahead and say it: "There is practically none in this 'blood bath." If I'm going to see this movie because I liked the other ones and want to be grossed out then that's exactly what I want. I want muscles on the ground, blood on the lens and people screaming in the theater. Not this bull! Don't waste your money, please. I know I gave "Meet The Spartans" a lame review but that is just because I didn't personally like that humor. This movie actually deserves its rating (a generous one at that). Did I enjoy the other "Saw"s - overall, yes. Did I enjoy this movie - I have blocked it from my memory it is so terrible. Replay Value: 0
Title: Semi-Pro
Rating: 1/5
Review: I must say that I am literally embarrassed for Will Ferrell and his choice of this role. If you want to see all the minor, not so funny, reject jokes of Anchorman, Talladega Nights and Walk Hard then watch this movie. If you want to see a funny movie with actors you can actually respect then keep on looking. I only laughed 3 times in the entire movie, consider yourself warned. Replay Value: 0
Title: Meet The Spartans
Rating: .5/5
Review: I somewhat wanted to give this film a one star rating but I can't bring myself to do it. I will say however, despite the fact that I didn't like this movie (at all), it was good for what it was trying to be: a dumb, get rich movie. I'm going to do this review in a pro/con style.
Pro: Surprisingly good acting
Cons: Horrible story line, way too many penis/homosexual jokes, wasn't funny.... at all, lame action sequences and obvious 3 day film timeline.
Overall it was a terrible movie by my standards but if you like dumb humor, want to be "entertained" and care nothing for a quality film then look no further. Replay Value: 0
Title: Witless Protection
Rating: .5/5
Review: "Let's make a comedy movie full of superiority humor and star one of the least funny celebrities on the face of the planet." This had to have been Charles Carner's thought process in making this movie. This film follows Larry's pursuit to be an FBI agent and his mishaps in kidnapping a member of the witness protection program. He, just trying to be a country boy, turns out to be the only honest john amongst crooked cops and conniving royalty. It's entirely predictable, nothing even worth mentioning cinematically and the characters, while well developed, are annoying easily forgettable. Through out the entire movie there were sexual jokes, masturbation jokes, caste jokes, racial jokes, weight jokes, fart jokes, fake accents and horrid acting - need I tell you that Larry The Cable Guy was in it or did you already pick up on it? I neither laughed nor smiled a single time in this comedy and wanted to turn it off so badly. Yet I pressed on in order to accurately review this piece of crap. This is by far the worst 7.5 million dollars Lionsgate ever spent - don't even waste you time. Replay Value: 0
Title: Baghead
Rating: .5/5
Review: This movie quite possible made me doubt the reasoning behind its existence. It's not funny. It's not scary. The characters are predictable and uninteresting. The plot is somewhat intriguing as four friends decide to get away and write a movie at a cabin. The cabin is cozy and secluded and as the sexual tension rises their story develops more and more until eventually they decide to make a movie about a bag headed monster. It is mundanely boring from beginning to end and is not worth any sort of recognition. Avoid at all costs. Replay Value: 0
Title: Seven Pounds
Rating: .5/5
Review: Let me first explain why I gave this movie such a low rating. I'm a REALLY big fan of trailers that don't give anything about the movie away. In case you missed the trailer for Seven Pounds, it was very intriguing and made everyone I talked to about it want to see the movie. BUT, when I went to see this 2 hour movie I was waiting for the story to pick up for the first hour and a half. Once I realized that nothing was going to happen, I decided to accept it for what it was. Upon accepting this piece of junk I realized that the only thing I'd been watching was a repeated downfall of some wanna-be character. A friend of mine said it well, "Will Smith tries to act too 'epic.'" That's incredibly true in this movie and should be stated. If you're expecting any sort of half way decent story, plot, acting, cinematography, editing or movie, then stay away from "Seven Pounds." If you want to waste 2 hours with bad, too epic for his own good acting, choppy editing, average cinematography, and an inconclusive story that has NO redemptive quality then by all means, watch this movie. Most of the time I would say that a movie such as "Date Movie" or "Meet The Spartans" would be the worst movie of the year but the fact of the matter is that there are some people who like that kind if "humor." If you told me that you liked "Scary Movie" or "White Chicks" then I'd say to you, "You'd probably like 'Meet The Spartans' then." If you told me, "I'm a human being," I would say to you, "Do NOT see 'Seven Pounds.'"
